Strategies for Achieving Healthy Nails

Let me be real with you, weak, brittle nails are frustrating. I know because I’ve been there! Nearly 20% of us struggle with nails that break at the slightest bump (so annoying, right?). But here’s the good news: simple changes can make a huge difference in your nail health.

When clients come to Salon Baci with nail concerns, we don’t just slap on some polish and call it a day. I’m all about addressing the root cause because beautiful nails start with healthy nails. Whether you’re dealing with peeling, breaking, or just want to grow those babies out, these tips will get you there.

1. Feed Your Nails With a Balanced Diet

I cannot stress this enough: what you eat directly affects your nail health! When my nails were going through a brittle phase last year, the first thing I changed was my diet, and wow, what a difference.

Proteins are absolute superstars for nail growth. I make sure to get chicken, fish, beans, or tofu in most of my meals because they provide the building blocks your nails need. And those leafy greens? They’re not just good for your waistline, they’re packed with vitamins that make your nails do a happy dance!

I did some additional research on the importance of diet and found Dr. Melissa Tanaka, a dermatologist who specializes in nail health, to explain exactly why diet matters so much:

“The nail plate is composed primarily of keratin, a protein that requires adequate dietary protein for synthesis. Biotin, iron, zinc, and vitamins A and C are particularly critical for nail integrity. Deficiencies in these nutrients can lead to brittle nails, “ridging”, and slow growth. In my clinical practice, I’ve observed significant improvement in nail strength when patients optimize their nutrient intake through both diet and targeted supplementation.” (1)

See what she’s saying? Your nails are literally made from what you eat. That’s why we always tell clients that fantastic nails start in the kitchen, not just in the salon. It’s simply all about healthy nail growth. And if you’re struggling to get all those nutrients, a good biotin supplement can be a total game-changer. It’s a vibe!

2. Stay Hydrated (Inside and Out)

Let’s talk hydration – and not just the fancy hand creams (though we’ll get to those too). Drinking water is probably the most underrated beauty tip of all time!

When I’m properly hydrated, my nails grow faster and break less. It’s that simple. I keep a cute water bottle with me at all times as a reminder. The difference between my nails on weeks I drink my 8+ glasses versus weeks I don’t is honestly shocking.

Foods That Hydrate Your Nails

Water isn’t the only way to hydrate those cuticles! Here are my go-to hydrating foods that help my nails stay strong:

Food

Hydration Level

Bonus Nail Benefits

Watermelon

Super High

Contains lycopene that protects nail cells

Cucumber

High

Silica content strengthens brittle nails

Avocado

Medium

Healthy fats make nails flexible and less prone to breaking

Strawberries

Medium-High

Vitamin C supports collagen production for nail beds

Oranges

Medium-High

Antioxidants prevent nail cell damage

I love snacking on these throughout the day – they’re like little hydration boosters for your nails!

How to Tell If Your Nails Need More Hydration

Your nails will tell you when they’re thirsty. Here’s what I look for:

  1. Dry, flaky cuticles (major dehydration red flag!)
  2. Nails that bend easily and then break
  3. White spots are appearing more frequently
  4. Nails that chip rather than grow

If you’re seeing any of these signs, it’s time to up your water intake and grab some hydrating snacks!

    3. Practice Proper Nail Hygiene (Without Going Overboard)

Here’s something most people get wrong: nail hygiene isn’t about scrubbing the life out of your nails. It’s about gentle, consistent, healthy nail growth care.

I wash my hands regularly (obviously), but I never use harsh soaps that strip away natural oils. That’s nail care suicide! Instead, I opt for moisturizing hand washes and always follow up with cuticle care.

My five-minute nail hygiene routine has been a total lifesaver:

    1. Gentle hand wash with lukewarm water (hot water is way too drying)
    2. Pat (never rub) hands dry with a soft towel
    3. Apply cuticle oil immediately while the skin is still slightly damp
    4. Gently push back cuticles with a wooden stick (never cut them!)
    5. Seal in moisture with a fragrance-free hand cream

Here is what an experienced professional nail technician, Amber Liu, with over 15 years of experience, has to say about common hygiene mistakes:

“The most damaging habit I see is aggressive cuticle cutting. The cuticle serves as a protective seal between the nail plate and surrounding tissue. When removed improperly, this barrier is compromised, leading to bacterial infections, nail thinning, and stunted growth. Instead, I recommend regular cuticle oiling followed by gentle pushing back using a wooden tool after showering when the skin is soft. This maintains the protective function while creating a clean nail appearance and promoting healthy growth.” (2)

Exactly! We suggest to clients all the time, your cuticles aren’t the enemy! They’re like the security guards protecting your nails from infection. Treat them with respect and they’ll help your nails thrive.

    5. Avoid Harsh Chemicals That Damage Nail Beds

This one hit me hard when I realized my cleaning habits were sabotaging my nail goals! All those household cleaners I was using without gloves? Total nail killers.

Harsh chemicals in cleaning products, nail polish removers, and even some hand sanitizers can strip your nails of natural oils and weaken them over time. It’s not just about what you put ON your nails – it’s also about protecting them from the bad stuff.

Natural Alternatives Our Salon Baci Swear By

I’ve switched to these gentler options, and my nails are thanking me:

    1. Acetone-free polish remover – Yes, it takes a bit longer, but my nails aren’t dried out after.
    2. Vinegar-based cleaners – They clean just as well without the harsh effects.
    3. Natural dish soaps – And I ALWAYS wear gloves now when doing dishes.
    4. Alcohol-free hand sanitizers – Game-changers during cold season!

The idea of natural alternatives seems important to know. I discovered that chemicals that are common in nail products, like “Acetone, formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate”, can eventually be a problem. They can dehydrate your nails and lessen their flexibility.

The result can be “increased brittleness and breaking”.  For those who want to learn more and dig deeper into the effects of chemicals in some nail products, I recommend you explore “Chemical Exposure and Nail Integrity.” (3)

This is why I’m such a stickler about ingredient checking now! That extra minute reading labels saves months of nail recovery time. A short time to really promte your healthy nail growth.

    6. Keep Nails Trimmed and Filed (But Do It Right)

We get so many questions about nail length and filing techniques! Here’s my honest take: shorter nails grow stronger and longer in the long run. Counterintuitive, I know!

When our salon clients are trying to grow out their nails, our recommendation is to keep them at a “working length”, just past your fingertips, until they’re stronger. This prevents breakage and tears that send you back to square one.

Filing technique is EVERYTHING. Here’s our recommendation:

    1. Use a glass file (they’re gentler than emery boards)
    2. Always file in ONE direction (sawing back and forth shreds your nails)
    3. File at a slight angle underneath to prevent catching
    4. Never file right after showering (wet nails file away too easily)

The shape matters too! For growing nails, our suggestion is a slightly rounded square shape. It’s strongest at the tips where breaks usually happen.

    7. Protect Your Nails From Everyday Damage

This is possibly the most important tip because it’s about daily habits. The way you use your hands affects your nails more than any product ever will!

I used to use my nails as tools – opening cans, picking at labels, scratching off price tags. No wonder they were constantly breaking! Now I’m much more conscious about protecting them.

Our Salon Baci Nail Protection Checklist:

    1. Use the pad of your finger (not your nail) to press buttons
    2. Open cans and packages with proper tools (not your precious nails!)
    3. Wear gloves for cleaning, gardening, and cold weather
    4. Apply a strengthening clear coat even when you’re not wearing color
    5. Take typing breaks if you’re on the computer all day (those micro-impacts add up!)

These tiny changes make SUCH a difference. It’s all about being mindful of how you’re using your hands throughout the day.

FAQ: Your Healthy Nail Growth Questions Answered

How long does it typically take for nails to grow?

Nails grow about 3.5mm per month on average, which honestly feels soooo slow when you’re trying to grow them out!  We tell our clients to think in terms of 3-month goals rather than expecting overnight miracles. Factors like age, season, and health conditions can speed this up or slow it down. In my experience, nails grow faster in summer and when you’re taking good care of them!

What are the signs that something’s wrong with my nails?

Great question! Healthy nails should be smooth, uniform in color, and free of spots or discoloration. If you notice ridges, pitting, unusual thickness, or color changes, that could signal a health issue. Yellow nails often indicate fungal infections, while splitting nails might be a sign of psoriasis or thyroid problems. When in doubt, check with a dermatologist. Nails can reveal a lot about your overall health!

Can I get gel or acrylic nails if I’m trying to grow my natural nails?

This is a bit of a nail catch-22! While gel and acrylics provide a protective layer that can prevent breaking, the application and removal process can damage your natural nails. If you must have them, I recommend taking breaks between applications and NEVER peeling them off (total nail destruction!). Find a tech who prioritizes nail health and uses gentle removal techniques. Personally, I do 2 months with extensions followed by 1 month natural to keep my nails healthy.

How do genetics affect nail growth?

I won’t sugarcoat it – genetics play a huge role in nail health. If your mom has naturally strong nails, you probably lucked out too! But don’t despair if you didn’t win the nail lottery; even genetically weak nails can be significantly improved with proper care. I’ve seen clients completely transform their “bad nails” through consistent habits. Genetics loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger!

    Let’s Get Those Nails Growing!

Here’s the thing about healthy nail growth, it’s not about expensive miracle products or complicated routines. It’s about these seven simple habits that actually work: nourishing your body, staying hydrated, gentle hygiene, quality products, avoiding harsh chemicals, proper trimming, and daily protection. Stick with these, and I promise you’ll see stronger, prettier nails within weeks.

Why does this matter so much? Because when your nails look good, you feel good! There’s something about glancing down at healthy, well-kept nails that just boosts your confidence. Plus, those same habits that strengthen your nails also improve your overall health; it’s a total win-win situation. It’s a vibe!
